Now in its 15th year, New Mexico’s largest robotics competition is expected to see more than 1,800 participants from more than 16 countries at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Native American Economic Summit: May 9–11

This annual event held at Hotel Albuquerque aims to promote a healthy, self-sufficient, American Indian economy by bringing together business owners and government leaders. A simultaneous youth summit promotes entrepreneurship and includes educational sessions on leadership, media, information technology, art, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields.

Scientist in the Spotlight: May 14

Is the flu in your future? Nick Generous, of Information Systems and Modeling, discusses how social media tools are helping researchers improve disease forecasting. The talk takes place at the Bradbury Science Museum from 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund drive: May 16

Help area students afford higher education by contributing to the Los Alamos Employee’s Scholarship Fund. Donations are accepted year-round, but the drive for 2017 scholarship funds starts May 16.

Science on Tap—climate change and the arctic: May 19

Sip local wine or beer, have a bite eat, and listen as Cathy Wilson, of the Lab’s Atmosphere, Climate, and Ecosystem Science team, discusses what happens when warming climate causes arctic permafrost to thaw. The talk takes place at UnQuarked in Central Park Square in Los Alamos.

Economic Security and Vitality for New Mexico: May 19–20

New Mexico First hosts this statewide town hall at the Marriott Pyramid North in Albuquerque. The event will encourage participants to think creatively about strengthening New Mexico’s economic health in ways that reach people from all walks of life.

STEM Symposium: June 3–4

Build STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and literacy connections in New Mexico classrooms at the Embassy Suites Albuquerque Hotel at the third annual STEM Symposium. This year’s theme is STEM + Literacy = Student Success.

Los Alamos Science Fest: July 14­–17

Save the date for a spy-themed weekend that includes STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities, historical tours, and a drone competition.

Lab Volunteers

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s participation in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) events is made possible with support from the Department of Energy through the Laboratory’s Science Education Community Service Time Program. To request STEM experts, complete a brief online request form.

Los Alamos experts and volunteers can also e requested through the Laboratory’s Volunteer Program, which partners with the national Volunteer Match initiative.
